**SUMMARY** TIA Policy Statement on the Digital Television Transition (modified July 2005)
Digital Television (DTV) is a far more flexible and efficient broadcast technology than the current analog system. In the U.S.A., the DTV transition will clear 108 MHz of spectrum in the 700 MHz band. The propagation characteristics of this particular spectrum band make it extremely desirable for new, innovative broadband applications and state-of-the-art first responder communications. Of this 108 MHz, 24 MHz has already been allocated for public safety uses, including interoperable communication channels. The need for this spectrum has reached a critical point.

It is important to encourage the deployment of advanced wireless networks that can support converged communications services offering consumers competitive choices for voice, video and data applications. TIA strongly urges the U.S. Congress to set a date certain of December 31, 2008 for completion of the DTV transition.
