Freefall Any object which is free to fall will be accelerated downward at 9.81 m/s 2. (Neglecting air friction) Every second the speed increases by 9.81 m/s. The distance increases exponentially.
2
Demonstration of Air Friction Drop a piece of paper. Drop a piece of paper with a book on top of it. Drop a piece of paper with it on top of a book. Why did this happen?
3
Velocity vs. Time Drop at 1 second. v f = v i + at v f = 0m/s +( 9.81 m/s 2 ) (1s) v f = 9.81 m/s Drop at 2 seconds. v f = v i + at v f = 0m/s +( 9.81 m/s 2 ) (2s) v f = 19.62 m/s Drop at 3 seconds. v f = v i + at v f = 0m/s +( 9.81 m/s 2 ) (3s) v f = 29.43 m/s

Displacement vs. Time Drop at 1 second. d = v i t + ½ a t 2 d = (0m)(1s) + ½ (9.81m/s 2 )(1s) 2 d = 4.905 m Drop at 2 seconds. d = v i t + ½ a t 2 d = (0m)(2s) + ½ (9.81m/s 2 )(2s) 2 d = 19.62 m Drop at 2 seconds. d = v i t + ½ a t 2 d = (0m)(3s) + ½ (9.81m/s 2 )(3s) 2 d = 44.145 m Notice the distance is increasing exponentially.

Horizontal and Vertical Components are independent of each other. Notice the increasing distances. Gravity pulls them both down at the same rate.
