3. Definition Integumentary System : The body system composed of parts that cover and protect the body.

4. Process Because it surrounds the body, the skin protects other body parts from injury and helps keep microorganisms from entering.

5. Key Terms Melanin: pigment that gives the skin its color and protects you from ultraviolent rays from the Sun. Epidermis: outer layer of dead cells of the skin. Dermis: thick layer of living cells below the epidermis. Subcutaneous: layer of fatty tissue located below the dermis.

6. Common Problems One problem in the Integumentary system is getting dandruff. Another problem in this system is getting sun cancer. A third problem is getting skin rashes from makeup.

7. Working Together The epidermis protects the skin from bacteria and microscopic bugs while the dermis protects the skin from cuts and other small wounds and the subcutaneous protects the veins, vessels, blood, and muscles.

9. SUMMARY The Integumentary system is composed of parts that cover and protect the body that consists of melanin, the epidermis, and the dermis. These parts protect the skin from cuts, small wounds, veins, vessels, blood, and muscles. They also protect us from ultraviolent rays from the sun as well as microschophic bugs and microorganisms.
