Hair, Nails, Sweat Glands, Etc!

HAIR! Hair grows within a hair follicle (layer of epidermal cells which is in the epidermis to the dermis) Hair roots are embedded in the skin and have a blood supply. Grow and reproduce to lengthen hair. Hair shafts are the dead, keratinized cells we see as “hair”

Arrector pili! Smooth Muscle Attached to hair follicles
Muscle contracts when cold or upset Makes your hair stand up and goosebumps

NAILS!! Nail plate is the portion of the nail exposed to the skin
Nail bed is attached to the skin Lunula: whitish crescent on some peoples nails. Most active growing region Keratinized as well

GLANDS! Sebaceous gland Around the hair follicles
Produce oils to make skin waterproof Exits at “Pores” Not on palms or soles of feet Cause of Acne!!!

Sweat Glands (2 types) Eccrine glands: the water released by the body to cool the body. Located all over body. Apocrine glands: skin bacteria cause this kind of sweat to smell. Develop during puberty. Located in armpits, groin area, and chest around hair follicles.

Ceruminous glands: modified sweat glands which produce earwax
Ceruminous glands: modified sweat glands which produce earwax. Located in the ear canal. Mammary glands: modified sweat glands which produce milk in females. Located on the breast.
