How Do You Know If Water Is Polluted?
2
http://mathinscience.info2 Did You Know? Streams and rivers serve as drinking water supplies, recreational areas, and biological habitats. Influenced by the landscape through which they flow and the atmosphere from which the water originates.
3
http://mathinscience.info3 So, What Does That Mean? As water seeps through the soil, it carries with it substances applied to land, such as fertilizers and pesticides.
4
http://mathinscience.info4 Here’s More Water move through to streams and lakes and the fertilizer and pesticides from land use moves with it.

http://mathinscience.info7 We Harm The Environment
8
http://mathinscience.info8 So, Do You Like Seafood? Do You Go To The Beach? The next time you eat fish, shrimp, or go for a swim, think about the environment.

Let’s Talk About Nitrogen and Phosphorus
11
http://mathinscience.info11 What About Them? Nitrogen and phosphorus are needed for plants and animals to remain healthy. Higher level in surface water can result in eutrophication.
12
http://mathinscience.info12 There’s More Pesticides, used to control weeds, insects, and other pest have an impact on humans and the environment. Depending on the chemical, it could cause cancer, nervous disorders, and reproductive problems.
13
http://mathinscience.info13 That’s Not All Compared to nitrogen, a smaller proportion of phosphorus, from livestock wastes and fertilizers was lost from watersheds and streams. Laundry detergent was the leading cause of phosphorus in the environment.
14
14 FYI About 12 million tons of nitrogen and about 2 million tons of phosphorus are used as fertilizer each year. Another 7 million tons of nitrogen and 2 million tons of phosphorus are used as manure.
15
http://mathinscience.info15 Describe what this picture illustrates.
16
http://mathinscience.info16 Answer the following. 1. Which nutrients and pesticides are found in streams across the nation? How are they getting there? 2. Describe how humans are being harmed. 3. Describe how the environment is being harmed. 4. Develop protection strategies based on this information.
