UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 31 st January 2011 UKNF - Status, high lights, plans J. Pozimski
2
UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 6 th June 2011 WP1 - Major achievements IDR written, edited and published ECFA review Costing meetings – UKNF leading activity on NF Redesign of Target area for risk mitigation Investigation of particle dynamics in the baseline muon front end lattice and investigation of the performance of alternative lattices Studies of power deposition in the target and pion capture area due to secondary radiation Studies of solid and liquidized power jet targets for mercury risk mitigation Multi-particle simulations of the muon linac using field maps, comparison of gained results from various software packages with good agreement in transversal and longitudinal particle dynamics and particle loss pattern. Detailed studies of beam injection and extraction into the FFAG, studies of kicker and septum design as well as kicker electronics. Further studies of FFAG magnets and particle tracking in fieldmaps. Further progress on common proton driver work (ISIS upgrade)

UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 6 th June 2011 Heat load in target station Simulation results
4
UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 6 th June 2011 Target station design evolution
5
UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 6 th June 2011 Front end design work Muon Front End baseline description: Longitudinal drift Buncher Phase-Energy Rotation Ionisation Cooling Risks and mitigations : Transmission losses and secondary particles -> Chicane RF break down in magnetic fields ->Bucket coil lattice
6
UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 6 th June 2011 Chicane for secondary particle suppression Heat deposition from secondaries is significant: Three issues: Activation of the linac Heat load on superconductors Radiation damage Losses are 2-3 orders of magnitude too high → Mitigation: Chicane for high momentum particles Proton absorber for low momentum protons as protons stop quicker than pions/muons in material Transverse collimation
7
UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 6 th June 2011 High power RF in magnetic field Reduced magnetic field at RF cavities May enable higher accelerating voltage Comparable transmission For identical number of cells (but longer footprint) Increased magnetic field energy (and cost) Slightly higher equilibrium Emittance
8
UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 6 th June 2011 FETS RFQ, 324 MHz, 3 MeV MEBT, chopper
9
UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 6 th June 2011 FETS Status Ion source operates at nearly design specs (2 ms, 50 mA) but persisting problems with heater electronics and spare parts LEBT characterization nearly complete, but origin of residual source misalignment still unknown Beam at injection into RFQ ~ 0.3-0.35 pimmmrad (measured) Detailed study of influence of RFQ modulation on field flatness finished and RFQ design adjusted. RFQ beam dynamics frozen Only a few principle design decisions for RFQ left (coupling) Copper delivered waiting for manufacture Drawings for manufacturing started – finished in August Preliminary cost estimate for manufacture 160-200 k£ - 6 month Circulator to be delivered in Summer – high power RF setup to be finalized until autumn Laser for diagnostics upgraded after first hints with Frankfurt laser system.
10
UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 6 th June 2011 FETS – RFQ fine tuning matcher and modulation influence field flatness
11
UKNF OsC meeting @ RAL – 6 th June 2011 Next Steps RFQ machining should start in September High power RF setup to be finished in summer when circulator arrives Experimental programme involving cold model foreseen for summer - cooling test - high precision beat pull set-up at RHUL Detailed plan for RFQ assembly and testing under development MEBT mechanical design started MEBT beam dump design started FETS proposal in preparation
