Intentional Guidance Target Group 11 th grade students failing math and still enrolled in Module A or B (Algebra 1-1) Selection based on 11 th grade students enrolled in Module A or B at start of semester one Goal = to increase passing rate and to provide skills for academic success

Intentional Guidance Lesson Study Skills Group When: One period, rotating How often: Every other week Number of Students:45, 5 groups of 9

Intentional Guidance Lessons Identify personal learning style Importance of attendance and organizational skills Develop skill in reading transcripts, status report, and recovery options Identify and develop S.M.A.R.T. goals Overcoming barriers to success

ASCA National Standards Academic Standard A Students will acquire the attitudes, knowledge, and skills that contribute to effective learning in school and across the life span. Academic Standard B Students will complete school with the academic preparation to choose from a wide range of substantial postsecondary options, including college.

Research shows… Student success study skills are effective in increasing and sustaining academic achievement (Miranda, Webb, Brigman, & Peluso, 2007) Group counseling interventions are effective in addressing student academic concerns (Steen & Kaffenberger, 2007)

Our Goal The 11 th grade study skills group intervention is designed to support: Increasing homework completion rate Advancing to next level of math Developing study and organizational skills Increasing attendance Having a graduation plan in place

Achievement-Related Data Attendance: Single period truancy decreased by 40% Quarter One to Quarter Two Before group: 57 After group: 34

Lessons Learned What worked: Small group sessions Students completing sessions showed improvement in attendance and grades Individual academic review with parents Specific graduation plans were written What didn’t work (Limitations): Number of students that left for alternative settings Number of participants decreased

Next Steps: Continue early academic review conferences with parents Conduct study skills group at end of 9 th and/or beginning of 10 th grade
