There are two types of this virus: o Type 1 – This is when the virus is transmitted through oral secretions or sores on the skin. It is also known as HSV-1. o Type 2 -This is when the virus is transmitted through sexual contact with someone who has the infection. It is also known as HSV-2. * Infants can be affected by the virus through the birth canal. Therefore, cesarean section takes place. *

General Symptoms include: Blisters or ulcers, most often on the mouth, lips and gums, or genitals Enlarged lymph nodes in the neck or groin Fever Genital lesions (there may first be a burning or tingling sensation) Mouth sores Headache Muscle aches Fatigue

Prevention The best thing you can do is avoid oral and sexual contact with a person infected with the virus. Treatments It cannot be cured, but it can be treated. Treatments include: Acyclovir (reduces the reproduction of the virus) Suppressive Treatment (helps fight against outbreaks) Antibiotic Ointments (prevents secondary bacterial infections)
