2 Tulane University 2 Developmental Activities Tuition Waiver The tuition waiver is an important benefit Tulane offers eligible employees to be able to seek further education. Continuing education allows for the employee to learn new skills and knowledge for his/her current position or to assist the employee in obtaining another position within the University. Cross Training Cross training refers to the training of one employee to be capable of having the skills to do another function within the workgroup. Such training benefits the employee by enhancing his/her skill set. 2

3 Tulane University 3 Developmental Activities Participation in Professional Organizations/Associations A membership in a professional association can be beneficial in career development. Professional organizations provide information on professional trends in the industry. Research and statistical information is also made available to members which can be useful in improving the employee skill set. Mentoring Mentoring is a tool that organizations use to nurture and grow their people. It can be an informal practice or a formal program. Protégés observe, question, and explore. Mentors demonstrate, explain and model. 3

4 Tulane University 4 Developmental Activities Stretch Goals Stretch goals energize and encourage the employee to work harder at meeting more difficult targets and to achieve more than easier goals. Stretch goals challenge the employee to go beyond his/her comfort zone and learn new skills. Special Assignments Special assignments occur when an employee is required to perform the work of a higher classification for a discreet assignment or project. This allows the employee to broaden the scope of responsibilities and experience to prepare the employee for more responsibility within the organization. 4

5 Tulane University 5 Developmental Activities Community Service Tulane recognizes that civic engagement builds strong, healthy communities and responsible employees. Community service activities not only benefit the community, but help develop skills and knowledge that is beneficial in the development of employees. Professional/Special Certifications A professional or special certification is a designation earned by a person to assure qualification to perform a job or task. This designation assures that once certified, the individual is able to exhibit an understanding of the complete body of knowledge for a specific designation. 5
