AP US History AP US History Bell Work: What was the overall purpose of Thomas Paine’s Common Sense? How does it provide unity for the colonies- compare that with the Declaration of Independence.

Discussion Questions… 1.What is meant by the following quotes from Common Sense: We may as well assert that because a child has thriven upon milk, that it is never to have meat. We have boasted the protection of Great Britain without considering that her motive was interest, not attachment.

Questions Continued… 2.What advantage do the colonists have by staying connected to Great Britain… what drawbacks do they have by remaining connected? 3.What are Paine’s reservations regarding Europe and a connection to Europe? 4.Paine references the idea of tyranny anticipated- what does that mean and where does he talk about this?
