5 Kidnapping of CIA Chief William Buckley 1984 David Dodge was one of the first highly publicized kidnappings. David Dodge was president of the American University in Beirut. David Dodge spent a year in captivity and was released in July of 1983. David Dodge died of cancer in 2009 at the age of 86. Terry Anderson was kidnapped in Beirut after a tennis match in the middle of the street and held in captivity for six years; the longest held captive Hezbollah has held. He was released in December of 1991 and has forgiven his captors. William Buckley’s kidnaping inspired action from Ronald Regan and lead to the Iran-Contra Incident. In the months following his kidnapped, agents in his network were kidnapped and killed, which lead to the conclusion that he was tortured into revealing the whereabouts of his co-agents. The Islamist Jihad had claimed it had executed him and the US National Security Council states he died of a heart attack. His body was recovered by the Royal Danish Army and he was buried in Arlington Cemetery with full military honors.
