Medical Asepsis Training Learning to Perform Hand washing Efficiently and Accurately

Introduction Medical Asepsis Hand washing and Alcohol-based Hand rub. Working with patients requires knowledge of the correct methods of preventing cross- contamination between patients. All levels of medical personnel must be able to perform safely to prevent cross- contamination.

Agenda We will discuss the two most frequently used method of hand sanitation used in medical offices and hospitals today. Medical Asepsis and the use of Alcohol- based hand rub. Each topic will have all the correct step in performance within each check-off within the allotted time periods.

Overview Medical Asepsis is the first and most important training for anyone going into the medical field. Alcohol-based hand rub is appropriate depending on the conditions Unless the care giver uses the appropriate method to prevent cross-contamination, individual patients will get a infection from other patients. Vocabulary Medical Asepsis-Hand washing, in a method to remove contaminates from your hands Preventions of moving bacterial matter from one patient to another. Alcohol-based hand rub—for quick cleaning of hands when no visible contaminates are on hands.

Hand washing Evaluation of Competency. Given liquid soap and paper towels perform correct skill within a five (5) minute time limit. Must be performed within three (3) attempts or out of the program Each student will be given a demonstration and ample practice time, before attempting check-off.

Correct Steps in order Remove watch and rings-state reason Stand without clothes touching the sink Turn on water with paper towel, adjust to proper temperature Discard paper towel, and wet hands and forearms holding hands lower than elbows Taking soap and begin to wash hands and forearms using a circular motion.

Explain why it is important to use circular motion and friction Wash palms and backs of hands with 10 circular motions and friction. Don’t forget the thumb. Wash fingers while interlaced -10 circular motion and friction. Rinse well (keeping hands lower than elbows) Lather again and repeat the process, finally cleaning the finger nails with a orange stick. Rinse well, dry hands gently and thoroughly Turn off the faucets with a paper towel—do not touch the sink with your hands

Alcohol-Based Hand Rub Given the correct situation, no visible soiling of hands. Complete the procedure within two (2) minutes. State when using Alcohol-based hand rub is appropriate and when it is not.

If hands are not visibly soiled Remove watch and rings. Apply hand rub to the palm of one hand (size amount of a dime) Thoroughly spread the rub over the surface of both hands up to ½ inch above the wrist State the importance of covering the entire surface of the hands Rub hands together until they are dry Complete process within two (2) minutes.

Summary Be able to state the theory behind each method Must understand if you contaminate during or after the procedure, and begin again. Student will have adequate practice time in class as well as at home, before attempting a check-off.
