> 3 What is APA format? You are required to present your assignments in APA format The current edition is the 5 th Edition APA refers to the American Psychological Association Refer to the Publication Manual for detailed information (see next page)

> 5 How can I set out my work in APA format Read the Publication manual! For references, come to the EndNote (EN1) class

> 6 Indents (first line, hanging, paragraph indent) For the first line of a paragraph, the tab key may be sufficient (ask your lecturer) to indent the line Otherwise click on Format, then Paragraph Under Special, choose the type of indent (First line or Hanging) Note: a hanging indent has all lines in a paragraph indented except the first line To indent every line of a paragraph, use the indent icon -see bottom right in diagram: Indent icon (indents all lines of a paragraph) on right:

> 7 Breaks (Page, Paragraph, Line) To insert a page break (start a new page from where you are) Press Ctrl+Enter To break a line (insert a line break where you are) Press Shift+Enter To start a new paragraph just press Enter

> 8 What about references? References in APA format (5 th edition) require a hanging indent Perhaps use EndNote to do your reference list! Remember: you can get EndNote for free for use at home! The latest version of EndNote is version 7 APA 5 th is only one of 1011 formats available in EndNote 7 (739 formats in EndNote 6) See the EndNote presentation (and EN1 class) for more information

> 9 The Format painter The format painter is the icon in the shape of a paintbrush (many students confuse this with “paste”) You use the Format painter when you want the appearance of one paragraph to be transferred to another paragraph Most formats affecting the whole paragraph will transfer (font/size, indents, centring, underline, bold, italics) First click on the paragraph already with the required appearance Double click on the Format Painter Click on another paragraph and its appearance will change! Repeat this process for any other paragraphs (or highlight the paragraphs) Press Esc or click on the Format Painter again to cancel the format painter

> 10 Styles You can also use styles to automatically set up the appearance of a paragraph (including Headings) Come to the WP2 class to find out how (time permitting) Shortcut keys to modify headings: Ctrl+Alt+1Heading 1 Ctrl+Alt+2Heading 2 Ctrl+Alt+3Heading 3 To change the appearance of your headings (so that they appear as the appropriate Levels) Click on Format, Style, then Modify (and Apply) each heading You can modify any Style!

> 11 Graphs and Tables Where does the heading go on a graph? Where does the legend (key) go on a graph? Where does the heading go on a table? How many lines should you have in a table?
