UNIT 2: FUNDAMENTAL LABORATORY SKILLS Students will explore essential laboratory safety skills and fundamental skills related to microscopy and measurement.
2
Vocabulary Personal protective devices Proper hand washing technique Micropipette Centrifuge Spectrophotometer Electrophoresis apparatus Thermocycler Microscope Balance Water baths Vernier calipers Protocol Material safety data sheets
3
Objective 1 Demonstrate appropriate use of personal protective devices What is PPE? How can it protect evidence & the lab worker? What is the correct method for removing gloves?
4
Objective 2 Exhibit appropriate behavior in the lab. NO food, drink, cosmetics, lotion, eye drops, etc. Explain why this is important in any lab, and one that deals with material of evidentiary value. What is the PROPER way to wash hands?
5
Objective 3 Use laboratory equipment correctly & safely Locate the following in the lab: micropipette, centrifuge, spectrophotometer, electrophoresis apparatus, thermocycler, microscope, balance, water baths, vernier calipers, glassware, rulers. Proper use & handling of a compound microscope & stereoscope.
6
Objective 4 Follow laboratory procedures. What is a protocol? Why should it be followed? Online activity: Find a ‘case study’ where improper lab procedure occurred and what happened because of it. (can be about substances like food and drink in the lab, not wearing PPE properly, not following protocol, etc).
7
Objective 5 Comply with policies and requirements for maintaining a lab manual. Objectives, materials, procedures, data/results & conclusion! Accurate documentation: explain why this is important in the processing of evidence. AKA the Scientific Method!!
8
Objective 6 Demonstrate proper handing of chemicals. Why do containers need to be properly labeled? Material Safely Data Sheets: What? Why?
