6 My Gran by Sam I mean, when you say ‘gran’ you expect a nice old lady – or most people do! My gran isn’t like that at all! She had my mum in her teens and is still quite young, although she won’t tell me how young she really is – she says 35 but I don’t believe her at all. She is a teacher and brilliant at her job –and the pupils love her. She is really trendy in the way she dresses and she is always doing something – she writes books, is into interior design and loves to travel. Her specialty is beans – she cannot cook anything else – and always says ‘beans on toast or beans under toast or beans at the side of toast…’. And she cuts eyes and a mouth out of the toast and fills them in with beans. She can also do a ‘cowgirl breakfast’ which means – yes, you have guessed it – beans but with an egg and sausage. If I go there she just lets me in and never asks silly questions – like the time I had a big argument with mum and climbed out of my bedroom window at 10pm. I went to gran’s and she unlocked the door and said ‘Hi Daniel – great to see you’. She understands what upsets me and never gives me a hard time. I wouldn’t swop her for the world even when my friends say that she isn’t like a real gran e.g. she couldn’t bake a cake if her bum was on fire – and as for knitting, well when mum was pregnant with me gran decided to knit me a sweater. I was six months old before it was finished and because she had used the wrong size needles it was doll-sized anyway! Her motto is ‘Life is too short to stuff a mushroom’ and I think it says it all about her. I could write a book about her and perhaps I will one day and will probably call it ‘Beans under toast’.

8 Task 3 Many older people are treated with respect by younger people. Make a list of the older people you respect and give reasons why you respect and get on well with them.

9 151 Town Road New Town North Yorkshire YO16 5AQ Dear Headteacher, We live opposite your school and feel that we must complain about the pupils, as we are sick of having to put up with them day after day. We have even thought about selling our house and moving to a quieter area. The problems have got a lot worse in the past few years. The pupils are very noisy and shout at each other and are often rude to us if we are in our garden and ask them to shut up. They throw litter about and some even stand at our fence and smoke cigarettes. They all look very big and threatening and last week when a gang of boys kicked a football into our garden they gave us nothing but abuse when we said they could not have it back. They have all now started to shout at us and throw rubbish into the garden on purpose. We know that some even pulled up some of our plants the other evening when we were in bed. It is up to you to stop all this or we will have to go to the police. Yours sincerely, Jim and Molly Curtis.
