Selecting your UK Core Project issue Due date: Friday, Nov 13th In sum, your project presentation must identify and show the tensions in a global environmental issue. There must be two (or more) sides to the issue. The future of tigers: Should we conserve in reserves (India) or through farming (China) and how history and culture have influenced the emergence of these strategies Your issues must be concise, and focus on specific places
2
Bad topics Global warming in the next century – Too broad, too general The coming scarcity of fresh water – Better: Water scarcity and armed conflict in Syria Fair trade coffee: good or bad – Too broad to cover in full. Make sure to focus on environment more than politics, although they are certainly linked. Oil versus nuclear power – More an issue of technology and society than environment – Better: Representations and outcomes of the Deepwater Horizon oil spill
3
Bad topics Sustainability on campus – Too greenspeaky, sounds like a report instead of an exploration of multiple perspectives. Focus more on a downstream environmental context of sustainability. Regulating carbon dioxide in Kentucky coal plants – Must make sure to provide evidence and not fall into describing one’s opinion. Needs to bring in global perspective Any topic that borrows from lectures presented in class
