UNIT 1 CHARACTERISTICS OF LIFE CH2 - P. 27-31 CH5 - P. 87-102

Unit 1 - Outline Describe the characteristics of living things p. 27-31 Explain the role of homeostasis p. 31 Compare and contrast a prokaryotic cell with a eukaryotic cell p. 92 Compare plant and animal cells p. 87-98 State the roles of the cells organelles p. 89-97 Describe the relationship of the cell membrane and the cell wall to osmosis p. 97, 100-102 Compare sexual and asexual reproduction and the benefits of each p. 28 Demonstrate the use of the microscope, magnification, and lab drawings

CHARACTERISTICS OF LIFE ALL LIVING THINGS: are made up of one or more units called cells Reproduce Grow & develop Obtain & use energy Respond to their living environment

Living things are made up of cells Unicellular = one celled organism Multicellular = hundreds to trillions of cells working together

Living things Reproduce Asexual Reproduction: single organism reproduces without the aid of another Sexual Reproduction: two cells from different individuals unite to produce the first cell of the new individual

Living things Grow and Develop Most living things go through a cycle of change called development Then comes aging where reproduction stops lastly inevitably comes death which is also a process that separates living from non-living things

Living things obtain and use energy Anabolism: synthesis of complex substances from simpler ones o Photosynthesis in plants Catabolism: breakdown of complex substance to simple o digestion in animals Metabolism: sum of anabolism and catabolism

Living things Respond to their Environment The ability of living things to respond to stimulus is called irritability Homeostasis: organisms ability to maintain constant/stable conditions suitable for life

SECTION 2-1 - SECTION REVIEW P. 31 #1-4 - Due next class! 1. Define the five characteristics of living things and give an example of evidence for each 2. Compare and contrast sexual and asexual reproduction. What are the positives and negatives of both?

SECTION 2-1 - SECTION REVIEW 3. Define Metabolism in terms of catabolism and anabolism 4. Think of a non-living thing that satisfies each of the 5 characteristics of life. Does any non-living thing have all the characteristics of life?
