We’re going to talk about STIs – How you get them – How to prevent them – How to get tested and treat them

We’re NOT going to talk about Scary stuff – No gross or graphic pictures! Shaming people Having an STI does not make you “dirty” STIs are pretty common -1 in 4 teens have one! 50% of all people will have had an STI by age 25

Talking about sex can be uncomfortable. It’s ok! We want you to learn so you can make healthy best choices! We don’t know the experiences or preferences of everyone in the room, so it is very important to be respectful.

Why does everyone need to know about STIs? Teens are at higher risk than most people for STIs It’s an important part of healthy sexuality Show care/responsibility Less stress Make sure you and partner(s) are protected Help friends

HERPES Virus 2 kinds –HSV 1 and HSV 2 Get from: – Kissing – Touching area with herpes sores – Vaginal sex – Anal sex – Oral sex – Childbirth Symptoms: – Blisters/sores Many treatment options to prevent outbreaks and prevent spread to partners

HIV/AIDS HIV is a virus that can lead to AIDS Attacks immune system Get from: – Blood – Semen or vaginal fluid – Shared needles – Pregnancy, childbirth or breastfeeding Treatment options: – Taking medicine every day reduces illness and risk of spreading to partners! – PREP (pre) and PEP (post)

SYPHILIS Bacteria Get from direct contact with a syphilis sore during – Vaginal sex – Anal sex – Oral sex – Pregnancy or childbirth Symptoms: – Painless sore(s) Easily curable if caught early If untreated, could cause blindness, dementia, paralysis, and even death

Why choose not to have sex? Many reasons…. To spend more time getting to know partner To not worry about pregnancy To not worry about STIs Religious or cultural reasons Because you don’t want to! It is always your right to choose not to have sex!

What are your sexual health rights as a teen in Minnesota? Minor Consent Law: people under 18 can consent to their own health care services in emergency situations & regarding reproductive/sexual health – Birth control & condoms – STI testing & treatment – Pregnancy testing & counseling – Need parent’s consent for abortions unless obtain judicial bypass – All clinics in MN follow this law, including your school clinic!
