Physical Properties
2
Can be observed &/or measured without changing the matter’s identity Can be used to identify matter Examples of Physical properties: – Thermal conductivity, physical state, density, solubility, ductility, & malleability
3
Physical Properties cont…. Change of state – Solid, liquid, gas, or plasma Thermal conductivity – How thermal energy is transferred through the material Solubility – The ability of a solid to dissolve in another substance
4
Physical Properties cont… Ductility – The ability of a substance to be pulled into a wire Malleability – The ability of a substance to be rolled or pounded into thins sheets Density
5
Phys.Prop.: Density Density is a measurement of how much mass an object has and the amount of volume it takes up. One of the most important concepts in science! Can be used to identify substances.
6
Phys.Prop.: Density cont…. Mass is ALWAYS written in grams or kilograms! –Ex. 45g Volume is ALWAYS in cubic centimeters or milliliters –Ex. 10cm 3 Density is ALWAYS in grams per cubic centimeter (or milliliters) –Ex. 4.5g/cm 3 ALWAYS REMEMBER UNITS!
7
Example Density Problem Frank has a paper clip. It has a mass of 9g and a volume of 3cm 3. What is its density? Frank also has a lead object. It has a mass of 454g, and lead has a density of 11.35g/cm 3. What is its Volume?
8
Work on these problems with your neighbor. Jack has a rock. The rock has a mass of 45kg and a volume of 43m 3. What is the density of the rock? Jill has a gel pen. The gel pen has a density of 4g/cm 3 and a volume of 2cm 3. What is the mass of the gel pen?
9
Liquid Layers If you pour together liquids that don’t mix and have different densities, they will form liquid layers. The liquid with the highest density will be on the bottom. The liquid with the lowest density will be on the top.
10
Liquid Layers Check out this picture from your book. Which layer has the highest density? Which layer has the lowest density? Imagine that the liquids have the following densities: – 10g/cm 3.3g/cm 3. – 6g/cm 3.5g/cm 3. Which number would go with which layer?
11
Review What is the formula for density? What happens if you pour together liquids that have different densities? Will the liquid on the top have the highest or lowest density? Will the liquid on the bottom have the highest or lowest density?
12
One last try… Jake has a book, a ruler, and a balance. How can Jake find the density of the book with the tools he has?
