Lesson 5-11 Using Several Methods of Factoring
Objective: To factor polynomials completely
2
Review factoring: Factor out the greatest common monomial
Look for the difference of two squares Look for a perfect square trinomial If it is not a perfect square – is it x2+ bx + c? (factors of c that add up to b) If it is ax2 + bx + c use “magic method” or trial and error to find factors of a and c. If there are 4 or more terms, factor by grouping
3
9ay2- 4a Factor out a common monomial
Factor as the difference of two squares
4
– 2x4 – 12x3 – 18x2 Factor out a common monomial
Factor as a perfect square trinomial.
5
6n3 – 21n2 – 45n Factor out a common monomial
Use magic method or trial and error
6
x3y – xy + 5x2y – 5y Factor by grouping
7
Practice 5a2 – 20ab + 10b2 3x3 -12x2 + 4x 5a2 – 20b2 4x2 + 8xy + 4y2
p4 –p3 – 6p2 y(y + 3)(y + 2) – 4y(y + 2) 4p q - q2
