Bartolomeu Dias 1488 sailed around the Cape of Good Hope at the southern tip of the African Continent. Turned back, but unknowingly discovered a route to the Indian Ocean.

Vasco Da Gama Used Dias’ findings to sail east across the Indian Ocean. Landed in India in 1498 Few years later he made another trip to India this time returning with a number of goods and riches.

So what? Thanks to Dias and Da Gama a trade route to the Indian Ocean from Europe was now available. Allowed to release Middle Men in trade. Ships were cheaper than over land caravans Wealth for merchants and markets was practically guaranteed.

Portuguese Expansion 1510 Controlled the Southwest Coast of India. Goa became the center of. From there moved on to the East Indies (Spice Islands) Eventually adding Ceylon (Tea and spices) Set up trading posts on the East African Coast, foot holds in Japan and China. Established permanent colonies in Brazil.
