5. A College Boy In 1826, Poe attended the University of Virginia Seriously in debt, Poe turned to gambling. At this time he was also engaged to a young lady from Richmond named Elmira Royster. Badly in debt, Poe fled back to Virginia only to find Elmira engaged to another. After this, Poe moved away from Richmond and the Allans.

They were largely romantic since it was mostly imaginary, supernatural, and focused on the “weird.”
