Shooting Practice Aritra Nath and Shayan Javed Virtual Environments – Spring 2009
2
What the experience is – 1 ► New military base high up in the mountains. ► You have been recruited to train in the mountains. ► Show your skills by shooting targets. ► Purpose is to measure depth perception, by shooting targets closer to you first. ► User starts practice after getting used to the environment and the object being held.
3
What the experience is – 2 ► Single-fire assault rifle. Wii Zapper as a substitute for a rifle. User shoots through scope. ► Limited area to move around in. ► Two barriers.
6
Presence - Haptics ► Rumble from Wiimote as you press the trigger. ► Passive haptics: Wall behind the user and a small barrier which the user stands behind and shoots from.
7
Presence - sound ► Mountain ambience sound, to give the feeling of being up high in the mountains. ► Rifle fire sound (M16). ► Targets exploding ► “General” (Aritra) giving orders.
8
Presence - Avatar ► Hands on the gun.
9
Tracking ► Tracked the head using two cameras. ► Gives position/orientation information directly. ► Tracked the Wii Zapper. Worked surprisingly well.
10
Display ► V8 HMD with two 640 X 480 displays. ► Used Ogre’s StereoManager plugin to display two windows to each display. ► Have to provide IPD and focal length.
11
Applicability ► VR seems natural for training people to shoot, or training for specific military purposes or scenarios.
12
Study results ► To be published in the report. ► Ran 10 people through the study. ► Questionnaire + keeping track of how well the users did in shooting the targets in order.
13
Future Work ► Better tracking of the gun. ► Better priming. ► More targets/scenarios. ► Didn’t get to add shadows as we hoped. ► Fix busted headphones.
14
Tools Used ► OgreSDK ► Google SketchUp and Google Warehouse ► GlovePIE (for Wiimote)
