Google Sketchup is a free 3D modeling program that both students and teachers can use to model any 3D object. You can create shapes, everyday objects, buildings, etc.
5
Have students discover volume in 3D objects using Google SketchUp on a computer. They could create their own object/building or find one on Google Earth or by using the internet. Students would utilize measurement tools on Google SketchUp to find and calculate volume. Students can present projects and findings to classmates. Fun & Engaging activity that blends Mathematics with Technology.

The previous activity could satisfy the following standards: Common Core G.SR.08.04 Find area and perimeter of complex figures by sub dividing them into basic shapes (quadrilaterals, triangles, circles) G.SR.08.05 Solve applied problems involving areas of triangles, quadrilaterals and circles. G.SR.08.06 Know the volume formulas for generalized cylinders, generalized cones and pyramids and spheres and apply them to solve problems. MDE Technology 6-8.CI.3. illustrate a content-related concept using a model, simulation, or concept-mapping software 6-8.CI.2. create an original project (e.g., presentation, web page, newsletter, information brochure) using a variety of media
