3 Torches, Tips & Tanks Soldering often called soft soldering, is done at temperatures under 800 degrees F. usually in the 361 degrees F to 500 degrees F range.

4 Torches, Tips & Tanks Propane. butane, air-acetylene or oxyacetylene torches are the most commonly used sources of heat when soldering or brazing. A propane or butane torch can be ignited easily and adjusted to the type and size of joint being soldered, various tips are available

6 Torches, Tips & Tanks When soldering or brazing, there is a gap between the two surfaces that are fastened together

8 Torches, Tips & Tanks When two lengths of copper tubing are fastened together, a fitting or coupling may be placed between them into which each pipe slides. A clearance is required for the tubing to slide into the coupling or fitting. continue When two lengths of copper tubing are fastened together, a fitting or coupling may be placed between them into which each pipe slides. A clearance is required for the tubing to slide into the coupling or fitting. continue

9 Torches, Tips & Tanks A filler metal must be used to fill this clearance. The filler metal actually adheres to the tubing and fitting to be joined as it fills the gap. Only the filler metal melts.

Torches, Tips & Tanks In the brazing process, temperatures over 800 degrees F are used. The differences in temperature are necessary due to the different combinations of alloys used in the filler metals.

Torches, Tips & Tanks Safety Precaution : All connections must be free from dirt, dust, grease and oil. Oxygen can produce an explosion when in contact with grease or oil. A reverse flow valve should be used somewhere in the hose. These valves allow the gas to flow in one direction only, this will prevent the two gases from mixing in the hose.
