BSc Healthcare Science – plans for placements

Learning Outcomes DH Training Manual – 21 LOs Some very broad eg 22 We will condense into a sensible number and map to IRCP

Dates Block 1 (summer between Y2&3) –1 st July 2013 – 27 th Sept. 2013 (13 weeks) Block 2 (all semester 2 of Y3) –27 th January 2014 – 6 th June 2014 (19 weeks)

Allocations Draft already- students know, placement centres do not Use centres further afield – students are funding studies and less HEIs Issues to do with accommodation Same centre for both placements - student and centre feedback

Credit Accumulation and Transfer Scheme Each semester - 60 CATS Broken down as follows (15 CATS each) –IRCP (assesses clinical competence) –Portfolio (assesses “softer” skills, eg communication, reflection) –Professional Practice –Audiology in Practice

IRCP Will need to map DH Los to existing IRCP Will need to provide some explanatory notes about the mapping Assessed as pass/fail No mark (student is either competent or not) Have to pass How do we do this?

IRCP How do we do this? –as now? –one visit or two or none? –local teams? –HEI needs to be involved given credit bearing –Idea of licence – no need to go out for first visit but do so if new or struggling centre? –Group 1 Facilitator Gary Farrell/Daniel Rowan

Portfolio Have to pass What should be in it? Who assesses it? HEI needs to be involved given credit bearing Pass/fail or assign mark? Problem with assigning mark Group 2 Facilitator Jane Burgneay

Major problem Somehow need to assign a mark to the placement year Group 3 – facilitator Mark Lutman

Professional Practice/Audiology in Practice Both will take form of extended essay/case study Like previous individual projects But assessed by HEI Need half day study per week

Fitness to Practise No longer “protected” by Portsmouth Do not know how students will conduct themselves Keep records of sick leave, punctuality, unauthorised absence Be familiar with Fitness to Practise Policy Any concerns, act early

Other issues Statutory and Mandatory training –Carried out in year 1 –http://www.workforce.southcentral.nhs.uk/primary_areas/healthc are_workforce/widening_participation/scdl.aspx CRB and OH Honorary contracts Time off?
