The Era of Democrats Thomas Jefferson 1800 beginning of Democratic Domination Federalists soundly defeated in 1800 –Disappeared altogether by 1816 “Era of good feelings” Mid 1820 Democratic-Republican had split into many factions

Under Jackson three fundamental changes –1. Voting rights for all white males –2. A huge number of elected offices around the country –3. The spread of the spoils system –Spoils system-the practice of awarding public offices and other favors to those who supported the party
