Do Now: Vocabulary Definitions 1.Imperialism- when a strong nation takes over a weaker nation and dominates its economic, political, or cultural life 2.Protectorate- a weaker country that is protected by a more powerful nation 3.Sphere of Influence- a region that is taken over that creates satellite states for a powerful nation 4.Colony-is a territory under the immediate political control of another nation. 4.Colony-is a territory under the immediate political control of another nation.

M.A.I.N reasons for Imperialism M= Markets for goods Industrialization leads to a need for more places to sell good to because they are now producing more products. More markets = more $$$

A= Acquired new resources European countries needed natural resources to produce their goods –Two options to get resources Trade or Take (by creating colonies they could take resources for FREE)

I= introduce Christianity Spreading religion through missionaries was very important to European Christians –Age of Exploration spread religion to the New World, Imperialism will help it spread to Africa, China and India

Causes of Imperialism 1)Economic Motives –Industrial Revolution –Abundant raw materials and vast markets are needed in order to maintain an industrialized economy. –Industrialization caused nations to begin looking outside of their borders for cheaper and more abundant raw materials and new places to sell their goods.

2)Land /Power Spread –By creating colonies in other areas of the world nations would increase their power and wealth 3) Nationalism –Countries wanted to spread their power and dominate over their European neighbors
