6 Ionian Greeks found Black Sea colony of Odessos, 580 B.C.

7 Roman Odessos Odessos becomes part of the Roman Empire after the Roman conquest of Moesia in A.D. 6.

8 The Arrival of the Slavs  By the early 7 th century, Slavic peoples had settled along the Black Sea coast. They renamed Odessos “Varna.”  In 681, the Byzantines officially recognized the Slav- Bulgarian state.

9 Byzantine Re-conquest Varna was re-conquered by Emperor Constantine V Copronymos in the 8 th century.

10 Battle of Varna, 1444 A Hungarian-led army is defeated and Varna becomes part of the Ottoman Empire

11 The End of Ottoman Control After a two month siege in 1828, Varna falls to the Imperial Russian navy. The chief of the Ottoman garrison hands over the keys to the city to Tsar Nicholas I.

12 Bulgarian Autonomy The 1878 Treaty of San Stefano provides for an autonomous Bulgarian state under Russian protection.
