Population Growth Rate with numerical examples Overall classification of vital rates (Mortality Rates and Birth Rates)

 The annual population growth rate is computed by dividing the increase in population during the year by the population at the beginning of that year when the total population of a country is available each year. But for many countries including Pakistan, the total population is not available each year as a population figures are obtained by the census of the population conducted after ten years.

 In such cases, the annual population growth rate is derived by the formula (compound interest formula)  Where  denotes the population, at the beginning of the period/decade

 denotes the population after n years  n denotes the intercensal period  r denotes the unknown rate of change; the result is usually expressed in the form of percentage.

 The population of Pakistan according to the September 10, 1972 census was 65309 thousand and according to March 01, 1981 census was 84254 thousand. Compute population growth rate?

 For the use of following formula  is 84254, is 65309, and n is 8.46 (8 years from 1973-1980 and approximately 5.5 months more, which can be written in the form of years by dividing 12 so 5.5/12=0.46 so intercensal rate is 8.46 years)

84254= 65309 (1+r) 8.46 (1+r) 8.46 =84254/65309=1.2901 Taking log both sides we get 8.46 log (1+r)= log (1.2901) log (1+r)= 0.11090/8.46=0.01311 1+r= Antilog (0.01311)= 1.030 r= 1.030-1= 0.030

 Thus the average growth rate of the population of Pakistan during the intercensal period 1972- 1981 was 3.0 percent per annum.

 The population of certain city according to the January 01, 1972 census was 25678 thousand and according to January 01, 1981 census was 39784 thousand. Compute population growth rate?

 Suppose from 1972 census reports the population of a certain city A was 50540 and the intercensal rate was taken 8.46 years till the next census conducted in 1981. suppose that the average growth rate of population is 5.0%, find the total population after 8.46 years?

 The population of certain city according to the January 16, 1972 census was 19678 thousand and according to April 03, 1981 census was 26784 thousand. Compute population growth rate?

 The commonly employed rates may be classified as follows:  Death Rates or Mortality Rates  Birth Rates or Fertility\Natality Rates

1. Crude Death Rate 2. Specific Death Rate 3. Infant Mortality Rate 4. Case Fatality Rate 5. Standardized Death Rate, etc

1. Crude Birth Rate 2. Specific Birth Rate 3. Standardized Birth Rate 4. Reproduction Rates 5. Morbidity Rates or Sickness Rates 6. Marriage Rates 7. Divorce Rates, etc.
