AP BiologyName ______________________________________ Urinalysis Lab ~ Unit 7Mods. ___________Date ____________ URINALYSIS Analysis of urine (urinalysis) can indicate whether there is an imbalance of various substances in the blood. Various components of the blood may be filtered incorrectly in the kidney. As a result, a physician may order further diagnostic tests to determine the extent of the kidney malfunction. You will have four teacher urine samples to test in your lab analysis. Procedure: Retrieve safety glasses…..turn on and set-up hot plate for Test 5, Reducing Sugars. Obtain 5 ml of each of the 4 teacher samples in test tubes. Be sure to label each. TEST 1 - Appearance Note any unusual color, smell, or cloudiness in the urine sample. Use a dropper to add samples to the pH paper. Record in the data table. TEST 2 - pH Use the pH paper to determine the correct “power of Hydrogen” in each sample. Record in the data table. TEST 3 - Glucose Use the Chemstrip stick to determine the amount of glucose in each sample (mg/dl). Allow 2-3 minutes for the test to be complete. Record in the data table. TEST 4 - Protein Use one dropperful of Biuret’s Reagent to test for the presence of protein in the urine. (Remember that the solution should turn purple in the presence of protein.) Record in the data table. TEST 5 - Reducing sugars Obtain another 5 ml of each of the 4 teacher samples. Use one dropperful of Benedict's Reagent and heat for 5-6 minutes to test for the presence of reducing sugars ( sugars with free aldehyde or ketone groups). Record in data table. Data Table. 1. Analysis: For each of the teacher samples, identify the possible causative agent for any abnormal urinalysis test. Use nephron terminology in your diagnosis. Teacher NameUrinalysis Diagnosis _______________________________________________________________________________ ________ For the diagram below, identify the following: name of structure, nephron process that occurs there, description of filtrate /urine (hyperosmotic, hypoosmotic, isoosmotic) following these processes and a description of blood after filtration, secretion, and reabsorption in Data Table 2. afferent arteriole loop of Henle efferent arteriole venule glomerulus distal convoluted tubule collecting duct proximal convoluted tubule Bowman's capsule peritubular capillaries 10 2-Over, please
