Guard cells cause a stoma to open and close. Photosynthesis and Respiration Photosynthesis takes place in the chloroplasts of plant cells. Light energy is used to produce glucose and oxygen from carbon dioxide and water. Photosynthesis provides the food for most organisms on Earth.

Energy is released and carbon dioxide and water are produced. The energy released by respiration is used for the life processes of most living organisms, including plants. Photosynthesis and respiration are almost the reverse of each other.
