Objectives 1. Be able to analyze the flow of energy through the Carbon cycle. 2. Be able to analyze changes caused by human and natural occurrences.

What is Carbon Carbon is a chemical element. Look at the periodic table at the front of the room. 1. What group is carbon in? ________ 2. What is the atomic mass? ________ 3. How many protons? __________ ….but why is carbon so important?

What is Carbon From proteins to sugars, carbon is the building block of the molecules of life. Linked carbon atoms form the frame for molecules produced by plants and other living things. Organisms use these carbon molecules for growth and energy.

What is carbon 1. 1. Carbon is found in many forms, a few examples are: graphite, diamond and coal GRAPHITE DIAMONDS

What is Carbon Notice how the graphite was black and the diamond was clear. Different forms of carbon have different Characteristics. Graphite, Diamonds and Coal are all allotropes, which means that they are all the same element, but have formed different types of bonds.

What is Carbon In fact, carbon has an even more important role on earth that graphite, diamonds and coal. Does anyone know what it is? Carbon is the basis for all living things. All living things are said to be organic and contribute to the biotic factors.

Carbon Cycle Let’s examine the carbon cycle starting with autotrophs. During photosynthesis autotrophs take energy from the sun and convert carbon dioxide gas into energy rich carbon molecules. These carbon molecules are used for food and energy.

Carbon Cycle…a closer look… This chemical equation represents photosynthesis. 6H 2 O + 6CO 2 ----------> C 6 H 12 O 6 + 6O 2 Water + Carbon Dioxide --turns into- Sugar + Oxygen Sunlight Looking at the formula above, explain how the carbon cycle relates to living organisms….and how to living organisms turn sugar back into CO 2 and H 2 O

Carbon Cycle Does anyone have an example of an autotroph that does photosynthesis? When the autotrophs and heterotrophs use the carbon-containing molecules and release energy, carbon dioxide is released and returned to the atmosphere. This process is the opposite of photosynthesis and is called Respiration.
