3 Resident Rights Residents have rights If unable to exercise rights a representative is appointed. Rights must be posted through out facility

4 Resident Rights Information: Access to all records Know about condition Report request to nurse

5 Residents Rights Refuse Treatment Find out why refusing Educate about problems that may occur if refuse treatment (walking) Offer other options Report refusals to nurse

6 Residents Rights Privacy and Confidentiality Personal privacy Must give permission for students Close curtains Drape to prevent unnecessary exposure Right to visit others, make phone calls, see mail in private All resident information kept confidential

7 Residents Rights Personal Choice Choose doctor Take part in planning care Clothing Activities Visitors

8 Residents Rights Disputes and Grievances Voice concerns, questions, complaints No punishment for voicing concerns

9 Residents Rights Work Does not work for care, care items or other privileges Can choose to work if desired (garden, clean, sew, repair work)

10 Residents Rights Taking Part in Resident Groups Can discuss concerns and suggest improvements Support, plan and take part in educational activities

11 Residents Rights Personal Items Keep and use personal items Treat with care and respect Creates home like setting Label items Do not go thru personal items w/o permission (good idea to have witness)

12 Residents Rights Freedom from Abuse, Mistreatment and Neglect Abuse: Injury, confinement, intimidation or punishment that cause physical harm or mental anguish Depriving of goods or services needed.

13 Residents Rights Freedom from Restraint Cannot restrict body movement Maybe needed to protect resident from harming self or others Dr. order is required

14 Residents Rights Quality of Life Care for in a manner that promotes dignity and self respect. Speak in polite courteous manner Good, honest quality care.

15 Residents Rights Activities Activities enhance physical, mental, psycho-social well being. Promote creativity, self esteem, pleasure, comfort, education, independence May be small or large group

16 Ombudsman Program Supports or promotes needs and interest of another person. Employed by state agency or volunteer Not nursing center employees Act on behalf of residents

17 Ombudsman Program Investigates and resolves complaints Monitors Educates about services, issues concerning long term care Center must post: Names, address and phone numbers of Ombudsman.
