3 BSF POLICY- CONFIDENTIALITY Purpose of the Brenda Strafford Foundations confidentiality policies is to: Ensure Confidentiality of all information concerning residents, their families, staff, volunteers and contractors in the Manors Residents at the Manors have the right to confidentiality & privacy of information relating to their lives, condition, & care The employer has the right to confidentiality & privacy of information relating to the operations of the Manors

4 FREEDOM OF INFORMATION AND PROTECTION OF PRIVACY POLICY Purpose of the Freedom on Information and Protection of Privacy Act: To protect the personal information of employees & residents of the Brenda Strafford Foundation Manors that is collected in the normal everyday business of operating our programs & services This Includes both: Resident Health Records Information Employee Records Information

5 CONFIDENTIALITY: WHAT IS IT? Respecting & guarding personal & private information about another person This also means that information about the organizations, your co-workers, volunteers, & visitors is confidential

6 CONFIDENTIALITY: WHO IS RESPONSIBLE? All members of the Brenda Strafford Foundation…regardless of their role All volunteers, students, contractors, & visitors

7 ENSURING PRIVACY Signing the Pledge of Confidentiality at the start of employment, as a student, contractor, or volunteer Disclosure of medical information only on a “Need to Know” basis Never share resident information with anyone unless there is written consent to do so Never talk about residents outside of work Do not talk about residents in hallways, staff rooms, or locker rooms Shift reports are held in areas of privacy

8 ENSURING PRIVACY Never post pictures or conversations about residents and/or the Brenda Strafford Foundation on social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter Refer all request for information to the Nursing supervisor Remember to log off of POC or computer when not using it All written information about a resident should be shredded

9 FREEDOM OF INFORMATION AND PROTECTION OF PRIVACY POLICY This act protects resident health records information & employee records information Resident health records information: Resident health records are owned and maintained by BSF The health information in the record belongs to the resident and they are entitled to access Personal Information can only be released with knowledge and consent Employee records information: All employee information is confidential Available only to authorized people Records are owned and maintained by BSF Employee is entitled to access their own information
