1-Nov-15Saskatchewan Falls Collaborative3 Aim To reduce falls and improve balance –Pre and Post test of Berg Balance Scale was administered to identify if balance improved with exercise. –24 elders were selected to participate in a eight exercise program

PDSA #1 Objective: Strength & Balance Exercise program Plan: Select residents to participate in a exercise program Prediction: Participant’s balance will improve and falls reduced Pre and Post Berg Balance Scale test was administered

Do What we did –berg tested before implementing program –designed and developed an exercise program with Physiotherapist and staff –sent out memo describing program and keep staff inform –Implemented Strength & Balance program –participants exercised twice a week for eight weeks –attendance was taken –berg test completed after eight weeks

Study/Action Two groups: –Group 1 participated in Strength and Balance program –Group 2 participated in Walking program Post Berg Balance Scale test was administered 14 participants completed the program

Berg Scores showed that residents who were involved improved their balance Action –to continue the Strength and Balance exercises

Strength & Balance Group Results Out of the 9 that successfully completed the study, 3 participants had a change of 8 or more BBS points. According to Berg Balance Scale, 8 points are required to reveal a genuine change in function between pre & post tests 2 participants scored 0 1 declined by two points due to illness The elders who participated had an average score of 5 points

Walking Results Out of the 5 that successfully completed the study, 2 participants had a change of 8 or more BBS points. 1 participant scored 2 points 2 participants scored 0 maintained mobility The elders who participated had an average score of 4 points
