Anyone Can Grow Beans by Jemima O You need to have bean seeds – collected or bought O Label your bean – a paddle pop stick is handy O The seeds need to be put in potting mix O They must be watered regularly O They must have sunlight to make their food and to be warm O Add plant food when they flower

A Bean Recipe from taste web site O Ingredients O 300g mixed dried beans (such as haricot or navy, borlotti & cannellini) O 1 smoked hock (about 900g), skin and fat removed O 2 tsp olive oil O 1 onion, finely chopped O 1 garlic clove, crushed O 800g can diced tomatoes O 1 tbs Worcestershire sauce O 1 tbs pure maple syrup O 2 tsp Dijon mustard O Salt & freshly ground pepper O Crusty toast & wilted spinach, to serve O Add all to list O Add to my Shopping List O Method O Step 1Place the beans in a bowl. Cover with cold water. Soak overnight. Drain. O Step 2Place beans and ham hock in a large saucepan and cover with water. Bring to the boil, reduce heat and simmer for 30 minutes. Remove ham hock. Drain beans, reserving 1/2 cup of the cooking liquid. O Step 3In the same saucepan, heat oil and cook onion and garlic for 3 minutes until soft. Add tomatoes, reserved liquid, Worcestershire sauce, maple syrup and mustard. O Step 4Cut meat from ham hock and finely shred. Add to pan with beans. Simmer for a further 30 minutes until thick and beans are tender. Season with salt and freshly ground pepper. Serve the baked beans with crusty toast and wilted spinach.
