4. HSP 301 has taught me the theory of systems and that is that there are many different elements that make up a system. These elements play very key roles within a particular system. Every system functions within a larger system with its own distinguished parts functioning within the global system that we all share. 5. With this concept of systems in mind the elements within my systems have more structure. The understanding of the systems theory has streamlined things for me, and has helped me to better understand myself and my relationship with others I am still learning this concept and how I can apply it to my life, but I am learning that the more I learn about it, the more I learn about myself. 8. The next slide represents the systems that help to shape who I am and how they are all inter-connected. Each system has the capacity to function on its own, however, I feel that all of the systems are enhanced as they interact with each other.

13. Extended Family My extended family has always played a large role in my life, but I have found that because I have been away for so many years, new systems have evolved and and old systems have completely changed. Now my need and interdependence on these existing systems need to be redefined.

14. School I am currently a full time student at Western Washington university in a Human Services program which requires me to learn within a core of student. The student core make up a system within WWU structure. I am student at Kilgore college in Texas where I am living temporarily. I am an out of state resident trying to fit in with the customs and climate of the south. I’m not sure how this climate is benefiting me as a system but, I will stay optimistic. I am currently a full time student at Western Washington university in a Human Services program which requires me to learn within a core of student. 15. School My relationship and interdependence with both of these schools are closely linked. I need to fulfill the math requirement at Kilgore College in order to move forward with my degree at WWU. This pressure has changed me as a student within each school system. I have to stay ahead, especially in math. I probably spend ten hours a day online. I’m up at five o'clock in the morning, and I am on-line until eight o'clock in the morning. I get the kids off to school and then I am back on-line until three o'clock in the afternoon. When I attend classes three days a week for math, I am up even earlier. Functioning in the structure of this system has change me as I interact within my family system.

17. How will these systems help me in my career path? I hope that these systems I am functioning in will mature. I also hope I will be able to recognize the benefits I am receiving from my connection with them. I can only comment on the effects of a system as it promises to help me. For example, WWU promises to prepare me for a career as a Human Service professional by educating me and helping me live up to the CHSCP standards. The goal of the school system is very structured. With other systems, the goals are somewhat abstract, making a prediction about their potential to help difficult.

18. Why I chose my career path I never wanted to get involved in people's lives; my paths have simply always led me to that place, even when I wanted to go in another direction. I have learned to understand my gifting. I believe that when you come to grips with what your gift is, or maybe it is better said when you realize your bent, you begin to understand at least one of the things you were created to do in life. I have always been placed in a position where I influenced people. Influence is powerful. It could be used to tear down, or to help grow.

19. Values and Direction Helping is something I have learned to value and I am filled with humility when I serve. It is my ministry. I know I have been blessed with the heart and ability to help people. I respect that blessing enough to educate myself so that the blessing can impact more people. When I have completed my B.A. in Human Services, I will pursue my Master’s degree in counseling Psychology. Helping is something I have learned to value and I am filled with humility when I serve.
