Handel (1685 – 1759) Born in Germany Spent much of his life in England His father discouraged Handel from learning music, but wanted him to study law Snuck a clavicord into the attic so he could practice Friend of family heard George play organ & advised father to let him study music

Handel’s Music Operas – Giulio Cesare Oratorios – Saul, Israel in Egypt, Messiah, Samson, Joshua –Oratorio - a long musical work for voices & orchestra telling a religious story without costumes, action or scenery Orchestra – Water Music, Music for Royal Fireworks

Water Music Handel wrote a suite of 3 songs for King George’s party on the River Thames. This suite is called Water Music. The musicians were playing on a boat as it floated down the river.

Water Music As we listen to the music, imagine you are at King George’s party. Write a good paragraph about the party. Ideas include: –newspaper review –profile of a person who attended the party –summary of the event from a musician or waiter

“Hallelujah Chorus” “Hallelujah Chorus” is the last movement in the oratorio Messiah It is said that when the king of England heard the “Hallelujah Chorus” that he was so moved that he stood. It has become tradition to stand when the “Hallelujah Chorus” is sung.
