The Pythagorean Relationship
2
In words The Pythagorean Relationship states that in a right angle triangle, the square of the hypotenuse is equal to the sum of the squares of the other two sides.
3
Symbolically In other words, if you draw a square on each side of a right angle triangle, the sum of the two smaller squares will equal the largest square. The Pythagorean Relationship can be written symbolically as follows: c 2 = a 2 + b 2
4
Pictorially
5
Things to know: Be able to label a right triangle How to draw (and solve) the squares of a right triangle (pictorially) How to solve the squares and find the length symbolically (using the formula) How to describe in words Be able to prove (using the formula) that a triangle is a right angle triangle Word Problems!
6
Tips…. You will need a calculator….it was on the supply list and you should have one! You will need to know how to find the perimeter of a shape -You add up all the sides
7
-You need to know the difference between an exact square root and an approximate square root - An exact is: √6 - An approximate is: 2.449
8
A square corner lot has sides of 50 m. Calculate the distance saved in taking a short-cut across the diagonal.
9
