4. Working with the Chibobo Community for over 5 years. Involvement began in 2003 via VIEU member Kevin Gilbert, who was working as an Australian Volunteer International in Serenje. The need to help care for the orphans in the remote Chibobo region was brought to our attention and the Overnewton Community has been helping to care for up to 60 orphans since late 2003, working with Help Ministries Project (HMP). Trips from Overnewton occurred in 2004, 2005 & 2007, whilst links with a local Anglican church have seen other groups also visit Chibobo. The need to care for the whole community soon became apparent – “It takes a Village to raise a child.”

5. A balanced approach The aim is always to help the community to become more self- sustainable, and we respond to the requests of the community (via Help Ministries Project). Training – Formal (teachers, nurses, mechanics) + informal (through Aussie skills & developing contacts). Infrastructure – orphanage buildings, medical centre with solar power, mono-pump & play pump, classrooms, playgrounds, etc. Resources – educational, clothing, transport, etc. Aid – orphan care, famine relief. Income generation – crops, koala club, Mechanics project.

6. Barry Wood Memorial Award ~ Changing a Community. A grant of $2000 enabled Pride Kalunga to be trained as a teacher.

7. Koala Club –Empowering the local Women. The need existed for the local women to have something to do. Teaching sewing & knitting skills to the orphan carers and local women is changing lives and equipping a community.

8. Joshua – A changed life Born with 2 club feet, and with little hope for a productive future. Brought to Australia for corrective surgery with the assistance of Moira Kelly’s Children First Foundation.
