1. What are the main differences between the space shuttle and the space station? The space shuttle is designed to fly for 2 and a half weeks at a time. It can perform experiments, capture and release satellites, assemble the space station, and take astronauts to and from the space station. The space station is a permanent orbiting facility. It can also be used for extensive scientific research where astronauts remain there for a long length of time.

2. Click on the six images. What work is part of living on the space station? Some of the jobs are to do space walks and take pictures, to run equipment and computers, check hardware, read manuals, use a a soldering tool for maintenance, and mount a video camera onto a bracket.

3.What experiments are directed at preparing people to live in space? The experiments that prepare people to live in space are the ones to do with the human skeletal muscle, blood, ultrasound, and crew observation.

4.What experiments have to do with chemicals, building, or repairing? These experiments would do with crystal growth, in space soldering, and fluid dynamics.

Astronauts take shorts, t- shirts, underwear, socks, polar-tec socks, two sweaters, running shoes, and pants. All clothing can be chosen by astronauts ahead of time. 5. How many changes of clothes do astronauts take into space?

6. How are space clothes designed differently from earth clothes? Why? Space clothes have a lot of pockets and velcro so that astronauts are able to put away their tools and utensils needed as they work, so that they won't float away in the zero gravity.

7.What do astronauts wear during launch and landing? What is special about this outfit? Crew members use orange suits that you see when they walk onto the launch pad at the space station. If there is a leak in the space shuttle’s cabin it would keep air pressure around the astronauts.

8.Describe what astronauts do for fun in their off-hours in the space station. They look out the window and play with their food and tease each other. Fun is an ingredient to the quality of life..

9.What are the sleeping conditions on the space station like? Sleeping conditions are way different in space then on Earth. Astronauts have to attach themselves to a wall or a seat. The astronauts usually sleep in sleeping bags. They can also sleep in the commander’s seat, the pilot’s seat, or in bunk beds. There are only four bunks in the whole station. On missions where there are more than 4 astronauts, they have to sleep in a sleeping bag attached to their seats or to a wall.

10.What are the problems with getting to sleep and staying asleep while living on the space station? During their sleep periods astronauts have reported having dreams and nightmares. They can have trouble getting to sleep because of all the excitement of being in space and motion sickness. It is also hard to stay asleep in the space station because the sun rises every 90 minutes.
