Minor Scales Up to four sharps and four flats

Every major scale has a relative minor scale that has the same key signature. The relative minor is three semitones and a skipped letter name below the major. E CC The relative minor of E major is C minor. It is not D major because there must be a skipped alphabet letter between the name of the major and its relative minor.

In the harmonic minor scale, the seventh note is raised a semitone. This requires the addition of an accidental which is not in the key signature. Here is the scale of D harmonic minor: raised 7 th Same key signature as F major
5
In the melodic minor scale, the sixth and seventh notes are raised a semitone in the ascending scale and lowered a semitone in the descending scale. Here is the scale of D melodic minor: Same key signature as F major raised 6 th raised 7 th lowered 7 th lowered 6 th Note that the descending melodic scale is the same as the natural minor. Natural minor scale going down
6
When writing minor scales with accidentals, only use naturals when they are necessary to cancel a flat or a sharp: WRITE IT RIGHT! necessary natural since it must cancel the previous F sharp unnecessary natural since there is no key signature
