A fuel is a substance which has stored energy that can be changed into a useful form, usually this is heat..

Fuels burn to release their energy, if the release is quick then the result is more explosive

Burning is called combustion. See if you can write a word equation.. Fuel + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water Example: methane + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water methane + oxygen = carbon dioxide + water

Unfortunately, because most fuels are hydrocarbons, products of burning can be harmful..

Where do hydrocarbons come from? Diesel and petrol are made from crude oil. Crude oil, natural gas and coal are fossil fuels. Fossil fuels take millions of years to form. They are made up from the remains of plants & animals which died millions of years ago.
