If you can dream it, you can do it! -Walt Disney

Email- Please say which course you are in the subject line. AIM –any time you see me on. In seminar, you can messenger me privately by clicking on my name at the left hand side of the seminar screen.

In this unit, you will identify your individual learning style and learn about Kaplan resources. Unit Outcomes After completing this unit, you should be able to: *Identify your learning style *Develop changes in study habits *Identify Kaplan Resources to help you be successful

Discussion Board Question Reading Assignments: *Course Announcements *Power Up Text Ch. 2,5,12 Online Learning Activities: *Health Science Resource Room *Free Online Learning Styles Inventory (link on discussion question page) Seminar Option 1 or 2 Quiz!

Your learning style is the way in which you learn most easily and effectively. By identifying this style, you will be able to make the most of your learning environment. Once you identify the ways you learn best, you can modify your study environment and tailor your study experience to meet the needs of your own learning style. Examples: If you learn better by listening than by reading, you might find it helpful to record yourself reading your assignments and then listen to the tape afterward. If you learn best by actively participating in the task, you may find it helpful to experiment with new activities where you can apply the information you have read. http://www.ldpride.net/learningstyles.MI.htm#Learning%20Styles%20Explained

By recognizing and understanding your own learning styles, you can use techniques better suited to you. This improves the speed and quality of your learning. Three main learning styles: Visual Auditory Kinesthetic

Visual Learners: learn through seeing... These learners need to :  see the teacher's body language and facial expression  prefer sitting at the front to avoid visual obstructions  may think in pictures and learn best from visual displays  including: diagrams, illustrated text books,  overhead transparencies, videos, flipcharts and hand-outs  prefer to take detailed notes to absorb the Information in lectures

Auditory Learners: learn through listening... These students learn best through:  verbal lectures, discussions  talking things through  listening to what others have to say  interpret the underlying meanings of speech through tone of voice pitch, speed and other nuances  benefit from reading text aloud and using a tape recorder.

Tactile/Kinesthetic Learners: learn through, moving, doing and touching... These students learn best through:  a hands-on approach  actively exploring the world around them  may find it hard to sit still for long Periods  may become distracted by the need for activity and exploration.

Conceived by Howard Gardner, Multiple Intelligences are seven different ways to demonstrate intellectual ability. What are the types of Multiple Intelligence? Visual (spatial). You prefer using pictures, images, and spatial understanding. Aural (auditory-musical). You prefer using sound and music. Verbal (linguistic). You prefer using words, both in speech and writing. Physical (kinesthetic). You prefer using your body, hands and sense of touch. Logical (mathematical). You prefer using logic, reasoning and systems. Social (interpersonal). You prefer to learn in groups or with other people. Solitary (intrapersonal). You prefer to work alone and use self-study. http://www.learning-styles-online.com/inventory

When you are ready, respond to the discussion questions below (by Sat). Your initial responses should be in the 150-word range (approximately 7-10 sentences). Of course, you are welcome to elaborate further. Take time to review the responses of your classmates and reply with comments to a minimum of two of them on more than one day throughout the week. First, identify your learning style by taking the online learning style inventory accessible through the button in the graphics on that page in the course. Under New Users in the middle of the page, click “free online learning styles inventory” so that you can create a free account. You will be able to log back into this site to view your results and print them when you are finished. Each learning style is explained in the links on the left hand side of the page.

What were the results of your learning style activity? What are your top 2 or 3 dominant learning styles according to the inventory? What changes will you make to your study habits now that you have identified the way in which you learn most effectively (for ideas refer to chapter 12 in the Power Up text) and taking into consideration your strengths and limitations from the LASSI assessment (refer back to the seminar in unit 2 and your LASSI scores)? Post to 2 classmates: Find someone who has different learning styles than you do. What tips could you give them based on your understanding of the learning styles? Remember, you can review the learning styles by clicking on the links on the left hand side of the page http://www.learning-styles-online.com.

Let’s see what you have learned from this weeks reading.  *What Do The Author’s Mean By Your Peak Time?

Peak Times refer to the time of the day when you are the most productive. For example if you know you function best in the morning then aim to get your work done at that time. What is your peak time?

*What are some places you can get online when traveling? *What does the word “ergonomics” refer to? *What is the difference between a grouper and a stringer? (and I don’t mean the fish) =) BREAK TIME: Please answer the questions, then take a few seconds to stretch before we review the quiz!

*Groupers focus on the big picture first and then the details *Stringers look at all the details first and then the big picture. Which one are you? *Ergonomics refers to the design and arrangement of equipment to accommodate the people who use it

Things that affect Ergonomics: 1. Lighting-is it too light or too dark? 2. Seating-are you in a comfortable seat? 3. Desk-are you in a clean neat place where you can work? 4. Yourself – your position, your posture *These things can affect how well you work and how productive you are working from home. Places to Connect when working away from home include: hotels, airports, coffee shops, libraries and bookstores (it is helpful to be aware of these things if you can’t get online from home).

It is important that you know how to ask for academic help, use available resources, and use or create study aids when you need help succeeding on your academic tasks. You need to identify all resources that are available to you and figure our which ones work best for you in a variety of situations. The strategies listed below can help you increase your effective use of study aids. You need to try using various strategies to find out which ones work best for you.

For each course, make a list of all available resources and study aids that can help you learn class material and study for tests. Consider the following: academic coaches tutors, instructors, classmates, Online study groups, online discussions, class handouts, past tests, Course syllabi, exam objectives, notes (yours, classmates, or supplemental materials) features of your reading materials (table of contents, bold words, titles, outlines, objectives, review questions, summaries, marginal notes, graphics, lists of key terms, glossary, index, and suggested readings or references).

Benefits?  Able to process information thoroughly and organize in your own way  It is a learning experience! Think about  outlines of important information  lists of key terms  possible test questions  lists of and questions about difficult material  notes on readings  flashcards

 It is important that you use available personnel as a resource. For each of your courses, write questions that you have about the material or about the class in general (e.g., I don’t understand the difference between these concepts; can you explain them?). E-mail your instructor (or support person) and ask him or her these questions. Make sure to be polite and unemotional about your questions.

For each of your courses, list 2-3 classmates that seem to want to learn and care about the class. Maybe someone you had something with in common in the introductions. Write questions that you could ask a classmate about the material or class in general (e.g., I was having trouble with this homework problem, how did you attempt to solve it? Would you like to start a study group? For each of your courses, e-mail, call, or visit, at least one classmate and ask them at least one of your questions.

 Don’t forget to use all the great information from your LASSI study aids module.  Anyone have suggestions you learned from LASSI?

 Peak Time  Grouper/Stringer  Study aids for visual learners  Logical learners  Aural (auditory) learners  How to connect with others in class  Importance of knowing your style  Kinesthetic (physical) learners  Solitary/Social learners  How to find your resources  Last quiz till unit 8 exam!!!!!!
