1
Degree Restructuring Proposal
2
Issues with Current Structure Search Indexing (SEO) problems Duplication and inconsistency of content Outdated or missing content/degrees Inability to market individual degrees Jargon Inability for users to “shop” or search degrees (compare programs)
3
Our Solution: tarleton.edu/degrees A listing page and repository of: Associate Degrees Bachelors Degrees Masters Degrees Doctoral Degrees Certifications Accelerated Programs Continuing Education (Future plans) Other Workforce Partnerships (Future plans) Example: http://port.ac.uk/courses/http://port.ac.uk/courses/
4
Solving Search Indexing (SEO) Problems We will be focusing the main promotional content on one site. Example: Tarleton.edu/degrees Tarleton.edu/degrees/bs-marketing
5
Improvements Customized URL’s for each degree will be indexed by the search engines Keywords unique to each degree Each page/site will contain content specific to that degree
6
Solving Duplication and Inconsistency of Content By placing degrees in a centralized location, we will allow all sites access to link to the same content. Example: Business Administration (BSAS) Degree is offered online, in Fort Worth, Midlothian, Stephenville, and Waco.
7
Improvements All location sites, Colleges, Departments, and Program sites can link to the same content (degree page) which will be maintained by the academic department responsible for the degree. Because the content is in one site/page, we will no longer have inconsistent versions of content and multiple content owners/maintainers. When reorganization happens, we simply relink to degrees offered in that area instead of duplicating content onto a new departmental website.
8
Solving Outdated or missing content/degrees When a degree is added or removed, Web Services can audit the listings for degree availability per the official record (catalog). Example: New Fashion Design degree is being approved by the proper entities and should be available Fall 2015. Web Services can start the building process to be ready to publish for promotional purposes once approved.
9
Improvements Easier and more accurate approach to maintaining the information available for degrees being added or removed from the official record. Because the content is centralized it is easier to remove all existence of an outdated degree A centralized location for all degree programs will allow better auditing of available content.
10
Solving the Inability to market individual degrees Individual degrees will no longer share pages of content. Example: http://www.tarleton.edu/afe/undergraduate.ht ml http://www.tarleton.edu/afe/undergraduate.ht ml
11
Improvements Easier to share/market degree information Avoiding confusion between degrees.
12
Solving Jargon Confusion Content will be initially called by the degree name, not by the program or department. Example: NCELP (New Century Educational Leadership Program)
13
Improvements Prospective students will be able to search for common terms and keywords to find degrees and programs Can provide clarification on similar degrees that are not organized into the same colleges or departments.
14
Solving the Inability for users to “shop” or search degrees (compare programs) Prospective students will be able to navigate through potential degree options easier Example: http://www.tarleton.edu/mmas/UndergradProgra ms.html http://www.tarleton.edu/mmas/UndergradProgra ms.html Improvements: Viewing an entire list will allow students to discover different degree options Suggesting similar degrees on each degree page will help with comparison.
