4. What is an Adjective Group? An adjective group is one type of word group. The other types are verb groups, noun groups and adverb groups. Groups go together to make up a clause. Clause: a group of words that contain a subject and a predicate. Predicate: tells us what the subject is doing/feeling/what it is like E.g. Jill runs (Jill is the subject and runs is the predicate) G A N A G

5. What is an Adjective Group? An adjective phrase is a group of words in a sentence that describe a noun or pronoun in a sentence. The group of words could consist of an intensifier and an adjective or more than one adjective in a row. An intensifier is a word like ‘very’ or ‘extremely’ which makes no change to the meaning of a clause but enhances or gives additional detail to the word it modifies. G A N A G

6. What is an Adjective Group? Adjective groups are ‘elastic’ and can be extended to include many details. This makes them a valuable resource when we want to build up lots of information, such as in a description or story. G A N A G

7. Using Adjective Groups Why use one adjective when you could be very descriptive and use several to describe an object? A string of adjectives can come together as an adjective phrase in order to describe a noun. For example, in the sentence “Sally is a nice girl” there is one adjective, ‘nice’. However, in the sentence, “Sally is a nice, intelligent, beautiful, kind girl” an adjective phrase is used to give a better description of Sally. G A N A G

8. What do Adjective Groups do? Some adjective phrases modify nouns or noun phrases. For Example: The very small kitten jumped at the big dog. The man covered with sweat, trudged his way home. Other adjective phrases modify the predicate of the sentence. Here are some examples: Extra buttons came with the coat. Gremlins cause mischief inside of machines. G A N A G

9. Why are Adjective Groups Important? They give us detailed descriptions of characters and settings They make our writing more interesting They help us to be better, more descriptive writers! G A N A G
