3-8 Rates, Ratios and Percents Unit Rate – is a rate per one given unit, such as 60 miles per 1 gallon Ratio - relationship of two quantities a and b that are measured in the same unit as a divided by b. –To find an unknown value given similar results of another ratio, you would create a Proportion Proportion – when you set two ratios equal to each other to find one unknown Percent – out of 100, or by taking the number you are looking for divided by the total number of items.

Practice Find the unit rate.

Practice 2 1.) The USPS receives 38 million changes of address per year. Find the rate per day. Round to the nearest thousand. 2.) Convert 21 inches to centimeters if 1 inch = 2.54 centimeters. 3.) Convert the length of a football field, not including the end zones (100 yards) to meters if 1 yard = 0.9144 meters. 4.) A library has 14,588 books which fill its 313 equal size shelves. What is the average number of books per shelf?

Summary Explain the difference between rate and ratio. Ans: A ratio compares quantities measured in the same units. A rate compares quantities measured in the different units. Which model would you use to change 14 yards to feet if 1 yard = 3 feet? Ans: B since you need to cancel the yards out
