What Are You Afraid of, Deer?
5
Thoughts to Ponder Remember that grazing deer, with their heads down, may be well camouflaged next to the road. Heed the warnings of deer crossing signs. They are generally NOT in areas where a lot of deer have been seen, but where a lot of CARCASSES have been removed from.
6
Eyes Glinting at You If you see one deer, others are usually near by. Use extra caution riding at dusk or dawn. They are more active then. Watch for glowing eyes, moving shadows or movement at the edge of your lights.
7
Expect the Unexpected When a deer jumps, the first jump is almost always the direction the animal is facing. Latter jumps may be in any direction and often in a zig-zag motion. Slow down and go straight ahead. If you are cautious they will be long gone before you get to where they were.
8
Whistle While you Ride? Deer whistles have never been proven effective in keeping deer out of your path. Caution is always the greatest weapon you have. Be Alert, Constantly watch ahead and never overdrive your headlights.
