Outline #5 ENERGY
2
#1Energy The ability to cause change All motion involves change in POSITION, SPEED, ACCELERATION and DISPLACEMENT. KINETIC ENERGY-Matter in motion POTENTIAL ENERGY-Stored energy
3
#2 James Joule Discovered LAW OF CONSERVATION OF ENERGY-energy cannot be CREATED or DESTROYED but is only TRANSFORMED from one form to another.
4
#3Energy Transfer Chemical energy in muscles comes from food you eat. (potential energy) The chemical energy is used to move your leg to kick a ball. (kinetic energy) Kinetic energy is lost from the leg and transfered to the soccer ball. The ball stops when rolling friction stops the movement of the ball and heat energy is released
5
#4/#5. KE Formula & GPE Formula KE =1/2 (mass) (velocity) 2 KE = ½ mv2 GPE= (force of gravity) (height) GPE=mgh m=mass g=9.8 m/s 2 h=height
6
#6.) GPE? Gravitational Potential Energy Anything that can fall has the ability to create CHANGE…GPE
7
#7 GPE and KE MUST always = 100% Look at the picture on page 167 and explain what is happening.
8
Q. 1. page 168 KE = ½ (mass) (velocity)2 (0.5) (70 kg)(10 m/s)2=3500 kg *m2/s2
9
Q. 2 page 168 Thermal energy in the brake, tires and the road.
10
Q. 3 page 168 YES…the magnet has potential energy When you release the magnet, it is attracted to the metal in the fridge door and moves toward the door. The potential energy in the magnetic attraction is converted into kinetic energy
